14 Years ago today the rapper known as Big, Biggie, Biggie Smalls & Notorious B.I.G. amonst other names, was shot dead in an L.A. driveby aged only 24 years of age. As young as he was he had risen to the top of the Hip Hop scene & was seen as the pioneer of putting the East Coast back in the spotlight. His murder followed the killing of Tupac Shakur who died in similar circumstances. The East Coast/West Coast beef saw the two men consistently linked with each other until their untimely deaths, then the coastal rap rivalry saw the main vocal protagonists gone physically. Nevertheless both are remembered mentally.
Keeping with the subject, today is the day to focus on The Notorious B.I.G. A relatively short 5 year career saw 2 studio albums “Ready To Die (1994)” & “Life After Death (2007)” which was released two weeks after he died, both on the Bad Boy Entertainment album owned by his mentor Sean “Puffy” Combs (another man with many monikers).
Not one for holding his tongue, B.I.G. spoke upon the harsh reality of life for the first album, switching from agressive, high pitched to low & sombre vocal flows. The second album saw him concentrate on the trappings of success & watching his back from his rivals.
The Notorious B.I.G. is seen by many as the greatest rapper ever. Agree or disagree, he has undoubtedly left his mark & his legacy is his music which earned him many top awards & a tribute movie in 2009.
